Stock Market today April 27, 2010: Why Are Energy Stocks Retreating:

One of the major sector EFTs that is retreating the most in today stock market selling is XLE. XLE is an energy stock ETF. We ask the question of why are they one of the leading stocks in today's selloff. Here is our theory/opinion, and it is rooted in Europe, and is based on two points:

1. With the Greece default crisis, the EUR has been selling off, and the US dollar has been rising. Since commodities are priced in dollar, a strong dollar can mean weaker commodities (everything else is constant). A decline in prices of commodities may not be good for companies that make money when prices of oil and major commodities rise.

2. With the EURO going down, and the dollar going up, the price of commodities as viewed by european consumers would rise. This would lead to less demand for energy products due to higher prices in Euros, which would in itself lead to lower commodity prices due to lower european demand.

1. and 2. may reinforce each other. Is the stock market today working on pricing the scenario above? Subscribe to our newsletter to learn more. Signup forms are at the bottom of page, and also at the top of page.
